Who knew...

...that something that used to be so simple could become quite the adventure with a baby. I'm talking about a simple trip to church. Well I figured we'd been gone long enough and that it was time to venture out of the apartment to church this morning. I fed Arden at 8:30 and he fell back asleep which gave me time to get dressed for church. He slept until it was time to get him dressed and ready to go. I decided to feed him a little bit more right before we left at 10:15 just to top him off in hopes that it would hold him over until church was over. This had worked for his baptism so I was hoping it would work today. He fell asleep in the car on the way to church and we thought we were golden. Then the storm struck. We had decided to sit in the "family training for worship room" that just plays the service on a big screen so that families with kids can sit in there and not disrupt the entire service. It was a little awkward trying to sing the hymns with only a few people in the room, but boy was I glad that we weren't in the sanctuary because of what came next. About 20 minutes into the service Arden woke up. We picked him up and rocked him and walked him around a little but he would not settle down so I thought he could be hungry. It was time for him to eat according to his normal schedule and since I'd just given him a little bit before we left, I figured I would feed him. Thankfully they had a little screen set up with a chair behind it that I could sit behind to feed him in private but still hear the sermon. So I fed him and while I was feeding him, he pooped. Poop #1. I finished feeding him and took him to the bathroom to change him. He was happy for a little while (say about 6 minutes) and then he pooped again. Poop #2. I went back to the bathroom to change him again. I know the people outside the family worship room were probably thinking I was nuts going back and forth to the bathroom, but he's a baby, it should be expected, right?! So I went back into the room and as the sermon ended and we were singing the final hymn he pooped AGAIN! Poop #3. I mean really, Mr. Poop Machine! SO my efforts to fill him up backfired...literally..his backside fired! on me and resulted in 3 poopy diapers and no sleep during church. Of course, as soon as the service was over, he went right to sleep as William was holding him and we were visiting with our friends...go figure! BUT I was glad that we made it to church and got to hear most of the sermon that was really good today. I guess I should just expect every outing to be an adventure from now on!
.
Yesterday, however, we made a trip to Malibu for a work picnic on the beach and he did wonderfully. He slept the entire car ride there, slept in his Baby Bjorn the whole time we were at the picnic, and then slept the whole way home after a quick feeding in the car before we headed back. SO some outings go smoothly and others go poopily! I guess I should just always prepare for the worst and hope for the best!
