Here are a few pictures of the views from the drive:
Pretty sure this person like owns their own "mountain." There was a single house and barn just right on top of this hill overlooking the ocean...must be nice!
.
Our second stop along the way was the Hearst Castle. We got there around 4pm and drove up to the visitor's center. There were gift shops galore and after a quick bathroom break, we went to the ticket booth to try to get tickets for a tour of the castle. Sadly enough, they were sold out for the day, so we settled with a picture from a distance of the actual castle and walked around the small exhibit they had of stuff from the castle and were back on the road.
Here's our picture of the castle from a distance....couldn't see much, but oh well!
This was in the little exhibit area at the castle. We were amused by my belly's shadow so we had to take a pic. Consider this a belly shot for the week!

Our third stop was just a small pull off of the highway to a well-known elephant seal breeding ground. I had never heard of nor seen an elephant seal and was definitely in for a treat. William got out first to make sure that we could actually see some of the seals, and much to our delight there were TONS of them just lying on the beach. These creatures are the laziest things I've ever seen. Then again, I would be too if I was a huge blob of blubber that had to scoot around to get anywhere. They made me feel better about being so huge myself, because I thought "at least I can still walk...it could be worse...I could be an elephant seal!" We stood and watched them and took pictures for about 15 minutes before getting back on the road. We were amazed at their fins which were more like fingers than flippers. They were scratching their bellies and putting their "arms" around each other as if they were arms with actual hands. Crazy.
They actually look like they have mini trunks as noses.
Here's one putting his "arm" around his girlfriend...or so I assume.
This one is "scratching" his chest with his "fingers"
After this stop, we decided we'd better start figuring out where we were going to stay for the night. William had heard some good things about Monterey and after seeing how far away it was, we decided we'd stop there for the night. We pulled into town around 8pm and proceeded to search the town for a place to stay..........to be continued.....
